Bovolenta

The Municipality of Bovolenta is in the south-east of the Province of Padua and is surrounded by the municipalities of Casalserugo, Polverara, Brugine, Pontelongo, Candiana, Terrassa Padovana and Cartura.
The discovery of the remains of an aqueduct in the area led historians to suggest that its origins lie in Roman times. The place name “Buvolenta” is also found in ancient manuscripts following the donation made by Litolofo da Carrara in 1027 to the Abbey of Santo Stefano in Carrara. Under the Carraresi family it was the site of a castle destroyed by Emperor Maximilian in 1513. Bovolenta’s position near the point where the Canale di Cagnola flowed into the Bacchiglione river made this a site of considerable strategic importance. The local rivers and canals, the communication routes of the past, were vital for trade between Padua, Venice, the Adriatic Sea and the Euganean Hills.
