The Municipality of Pontelongo is in the south-east of the Province of Padua.
Pontelongo is first mentioned in a document of 1097 identifying the site by the presence of a bridge. In fact, Pontelongo straddles the River Bacchiglione, and comprises a series of smaller settlements lying between the right-hand bank and Fossa Paltana, towards Candiana and Corte di Concadalbero, and on the left-hand bank towards Schilla river. There were scattered rural churches dependent on parish churches (Piove di Sacco and Bovolenta). For centuries the Pontelongo settlement was split in two by the river.
Significantly it was not included in the list of “ville” lying in the Saccisica territory.
The history of the bridge took place in four stages. The original wooden bridge was replaced four centuries later, in 1426, by a hump-backed stone bridge with three arches built at the expense of the parish of Conselve on the right-hand bank, which shouldered one-fifth of the costs, and of the podesteria of Piove di Sacco on the left-hand bank which bore the remaining four-fifths. The stone bridge built in front of the rustic parish church of Sant’Andrea is pictured in Andrea Gloria’s book illustrating the local territory published in 1862. On the 17th September 1882 the river flooded, causing the bridge to collapse along with the houses downstream. It was subsequently rebuilt upstream in front of Villa Foscarini Erizzo.
Pontelongo is a large centre known for its mills and sugar refinery by the river along which burci, large flat barges, would transport goods.
